With the dual challenge of online learning and an increasing emphasis on student projects involving teamwork, it is becoming critical for faculty to explore innovative technologies in order to support collaborative teamwork.
Placing students in teams does not guarantee increased levels of collaboration, particularly in an online environment. We present the results from our survey of 150+ students across various online and blended courses examining knowledge sharing within virtual or semi-virtual teams.
The findings seem to indicate that usage of online collaboration tools such as IM/Chat, web conferencing and wikis facilitate and enhance the knowledge sharing within these teams. Integration of these tools into the LMS also may play an important role.
