Overcoming the Pitfalls in the Promise of Mobile e-Learning

Presenter Name(s):
David J. Swisher Abstract:
The growing popularity and availability of eBooks and various e-reader and tablet devices sends a strong signal that moving toward digital textbooks is an eminent reality. Likewise, the rapid distribution and adoption of smartphones and other mobile devices would indicate that mobile learning is just around the corner. However, as schools embrace the marketing potential and LMS vendors race to capitalize on the market interest to create apps and e-Learning, there are still many pitfalls and challenges associated with the desire to move to mobile learning and e-books, such as ensuring cross-platform compatibility, design & interoperability issues such as app vs. mobile-formatted browser, multimedia formats, availability of academic titles, and accessibility issues. We will engage in positive, solution-focused dialogue on topics such as: How are the big online institutions doing it? Is it realistic for a faculty member or department to develop its own e-books? Are contracted course development systems (such as Savant) a viable option? And, How can smaller institutions without a huge budget and design/development team get in on the market potential?
