Presenter Name(s):
Shalin Hai-Jew
Abstract:
K-State is building a digital entomology lab to supplement its online and face-to-face entomology, agriculture, and horticulture courses. This endeavor served to replace the face-to-face entomology lab where students study trays of insects that belong to particular orders, suborders, and families. This presentation describes the original design; the logistics of the visual captures and the technological substructures, and the building of related assignments. There are “lessons learned” and “anticipated challenges” for building science-based digital laboratories. (A digital poster session titled "Some Science Behind the Digital Entomology Lab at K-State" will also be offered. This is available at http://elearningfacultymodules.org/uploaded/SomeScienceBehindtheDigitalE...).
Session Type :
Presentation
Intended Audience:
K-12
Higher Education
What will attendees at this presentation learn that they can apply at their institution/organization?:
Participants will learn what it takes to create a digital entomology lab and how to shape digital resources, assignments, and learning objects to support student learning efforts. They will also explore a participatory design aspect which will launch in late September through Educause Quarterly.
Room:
